    Research Summary

My primary goal is the development of highly sensitive early detection assays by integrating magnetic and optical nanoparticles. We have combined magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and fluorescent semiconductor quantum dots (QD) in porous microbeads for potentially automated multiplexed assays. In addition, we are trying to combine magnetic nanoparticles with QDs for the selective capture and molecular analysis of rare tumor cells isolated from blood. As part of this project, we are also studying interactions between nanoparticles and live immune cells in whole blood as a function of surface properties and plasma content
